Tapton’s history

When we first launched our website it was missing information on a brief history of Tapton. We have now started to remedy this by mounting text on the township here.

Now loaded are sections on population and communications in Tapton. We have also highlighted a little about the eight ‘detached’ areas of Brimington land within Tapton, as well as one detached area of Tapton in Brimington and another in Hasland. This intermixture of lands, caused difficulty when the townships of Tapton and Brimington were surveyed in the 1650s. It appears to reflect tenurial (ownership) changes in the 1230s.

Over the next few months we’ll be adding sections on the manor, economic history and historic buildings, such as Tapton House.

We are really grateful to the Victoria County History of Derbyshire for allowing us to make use of their draft text and therefore their research into Tapton. This draft text is not yet completed so it has not been published on the VCH website, but will form a much larger raft of information, fully referenced, than we can offer on our Brimington and Tapton website.

We have other plans to develop this website and will shortly be making available more free-downloads, including the entire edition of Brimington and Tapton Miscellany 1.
