We are a small group of local people interested in the history of Brimington and Tapton. These two communities are part of the Borough of Chesterfield.
We were first set-up, informally, in September 2006 but were formally constituted in November 2007. Read more about us on this page.
Meetings
The group meets monthly during the year (except July and August, when there are no meetings), on the fourth Thursday of each month, at Brimington Community Centre, High Street, Brimington, S43 1DB. Our meetings, usually with a guest speaker, normally start at 7.30 pm. In December the group meets on the second Thursday at 7.30 pm. One outdoor visit, usually a local guided walk, is held in June. For our current programme see our meetings page.
Publications
Each year the group publishes Brimington and Tapton Miscellany. This journal contains historical items on the area, plus a chronicle of local events during the year. For further details see our publications page.
We still think that printed publications are a way of leaving legacy information to future generations – long after this website will have ceased to function!
History resources
We think it’s important that those interested in our community have access to a range of information about its history. To this end you’ll find maps, plans, and accounts of the area on this website. Please take some time to explore this growing resource by using the menu to the top right. You might want to start by visiting our history and download page here, where there are links to short histories of Tapton and Brimington along with access to a variety of downloadable information including maps, pamphlets and some past editions of our Brimington and Tapton Miscellany. Don’t forget to visit our gallery page which features old photographs of the area.
We also publish a regular blog about various local history aspects.
We work extensively with the Derbyshire Victoria County History Trust to try and make sure our information is as accurate as can be. But if you spot a mistake or have further information let us know!
Unfortunately we can’t undertake detailed research for individuals but we may be able to point you in the right direction.
Other activities
Our aim is to encourage people to bring along items that help record the history of Brimington and Tapton. If you have any old photographs, documents or a story to tell about the our area and would be willing to share these with us, we’d love to hear from you. You can contact us here.
Membership
To find out more about joining us see our membership page.
Membership of the Group costs £10 per year (there are no reductions). Benefits include reduced admission to the group’s fourth Thursday meetings. All members receive a free copy of the Brimington and Tapton Miscellany relative to the year that their subscription covers.
The Group is affiliated to the British Association for Local History and is a member of the Derbyshire Victoria County History Trust.
How we are run
A small committee runs the affairs of the group. This is elected at our annual general meeting. This committee agrees our meetings programme and generally oversees our affairs.
We don’t receive much in the way of grants, so activities of the group, including this website, are mostly funded by our members and external publication sales.
