We’ve made another edition of our yearly journal – Brimington and Tapton Miscellany – available to download for free.
Number 4 in our series is the volume for 2011, originally published in January 2012.
It contains articles on Brimington’s doctors, First World War prisoners captured at Brimington, and the late Peter Harrison’s memories of his Brimington childhood.
Titled ‘A Kid from Cott Lane’ (Cotterhill Lane) Peter’s article covers the 1930s and Second World War years in Brimington. He writes about his school-life in some detail and even carries a plan of the old school’s layout (below). Other organisations such as the Air Training Corps, scouts, alongside playing sports and much more feature. Just what was it like in the 1930s Brimington? You’ll discover in this account. It’s a fascinating record of Peter’s childhood that we feel privileged to have been able to publish.

The chronical of local events covers 2011 and includes such issues as sale of the John Street play area, completion of the Hollingwood Hub, the 40th anniversary of Brimington Library, official opening of the new Springwell College buildings (with a short review of secondary education history), demolition of the Arnold Laver ‘Timber World’ premises, Brimington Road, Tapton and many more.
