Back in June our local history group visited the Walking Together trail, starting at the Markham Vale Environment Centre. Now we’ve received news that the final 13 artworks are to be installed and commemorated with an event on the afternoon of Thursday 13 October.
One of the final 13 men to be remembered in the trail is Alfred Garland, Timber Drawer, of 32 Foljambe Road, Brimington. He lost his life in the 1938 disaster at Markham Colliery. He was aged 52 and had worked at Markham for many years, working the night shift for five years. He left his widow and a daughter.

The following is information we’ve been sent about the event next Thursday afternoon (13 October) at the Markham Vale Environment Centre to mark the completion of the Walking Together memorial trail.
Figures honouring the final 13 miners to be commemorated as part of the Walking Together trail will be unveiled next week.
To mark the event the Markham Vale Heritage Group will be opening up the Markham Vale Environment Centre to welcome visitors on the afternoon of Thursday 13 October. On view will be mining themed displays, created by local schools and community groups. There will also be an opportunity to meet others interested in Markham’s mining heritage, have refreshments, and walk the completed trail in your own time.
The mining memorial artwork by artist Steve Broadbent honours the 106 men who died in three separate disasters at Markham Colliery in 1937, 1938 and 1973. This is a highly significant moment as the latest installation marks the completion of the trail, a ten-year journey which has been led by Derbyshire County Council, HBD and the voluntary Markham Vale Heritage Group, coordinated by Beam and enabled by many funders, sponsors and supporters.
The final group of 13 is generously supported by Viridor Credits Environmental Company, National Lottery Heritage Fund, Great Bear, Reckitt and Henkel and community public donations; we thank them all for their contributions.
