Meetings programme for 2024 published

Our chairman Doug Spencer has worked his usual magic on getting together an interesting local history group meetings programme for 2024 – which we’ve now been able to publish. You’ll find a pdf download at the bottom this page. You can also find the full programme here.

It’s our usual mix of subjects – but with a special emphasis on Brimington and Tapton. For example, our summer out-door walk will be looking at Tapton House (June), with other subjects such as the former blast furnace on Brimington Common (February) getting a look in, as well as the now popular multi-subject local presentation evening (September). We’ll also be showing some old photographs of Brimington at our December AGM.

Wider local subjects are covered too; ranging from Henderson’s sauce, the former Mines Rescue Station (on Infirmary Road) to the ever-popular custom of well-dressing, and many more.

We are also hoping to change the room in which we hold meetings. The main hall at the community centre has become much too big for us. The acoustics are not so good either. So, we are hoping to move to the meeting room at the Community Centre. It’s much warmer in there too! We’ll be letting you know how this proposed move goes.

Don’t forget everyone is welcome to attend our meetings – whether you are a member or not. If you are a member you’ll only have to pay £1 – it’s £3 for non-members. We also always have light refreshments available after the meeting.

Our venue isn’t changing – it remains at Brimington Community Centre, High Street, Brimington, S43 1DB. We start at 7.30pm with doors opening around 7pm. As always we hope to see you at our meetings.

Finally, our next meeting is on Thursday 23 November when Sandra Struggles will be talking about Lady Ottoline Morrell. She was born in 1873 as Ottoline Anne Violet Cavendish – Bentinck, half-sister of William Cavendish – Bentinck, the 6th Duke of Portland of Welbeck Abbey.
